WHERE HISTORY MEETS HOSPITALITY
WHERE HISTORY MEETS HOSPITALITY
Restaurant Legjenda stands on land shaped by nearly two centuries of Albanian history. The entrance to the Nikaj family’s publishing house and alcohol factory once stood here—institutions established by a family whose work helped preserve Albanian culture, identity and independent thought. Today, this legacy continues through hospitality, local cuisine, nature and art beneath Rozafa Castle.

Our Story
At the heart of this story is Dom Ndoc Nikaj—a priest, writer and one of Albania’s earliest novelists. Through his literature and public work, he raised awareness of Albanian patriotism and culture during a period when the country’s identity was under threat under Ottoman rule.

His mission extended far beyond his role as a priest. He stood beside the marginalised and oppressed, while his literature reflected the same courage, compassion and commitment to Albanian identity.

A LEGACY PERSECUTED
A LEGACY PERSECUTED
The legacy created by the Nikaj family was later dismantled by the communist regime. Their property was confiscated and nationalised, while members of the family—including Dom Ndoc Nikaj—were imprisoned, persecuted and politically condemned.

The regime attempted to suppress intellectual freedom, artistic expression and historical memory. Yet, although the family was stripped of its property and much of its work, their inner freedom could not be taken away. Prison, surveillance and poverty did not extinguish their spirit.

THE REBIRTH OF LEGJENDA
THE REBIRTH OF LEGJENDA
That spirit survived through their nephew, Franc Nikaj, who returned to this land and rebuilt it with deep respect for nature, history and his family’s legacy.

Franc developed Legjenda from its earliest concept to its physical construction. He became its architect, engineer, painter, sculptor, carpenter and builder. He created the wooden houses, stained-glass details, hotel structures, murals and sculptures that give the property its distinctive character.

Late at night, he painted the murals inside the restaurant, retelling the legend of Rozafa Castle through his own artistic vision. Sculpture became his form of relaxation, painting his way of speaking, and building the craft through which he transformed memory into something living.
